Overview: Medicare Health Insurance
Medicare was created in 1965 as a federal health insurance program for people ages 65 and above. These people can sign up regardless of health status, income, and medical history. Medicare was expanded in 1972, to also provide coverage to people aged below 65 who have a long-term disability. Today, the program helps to pay for many health care services. This includes hospitalizations, doctor visits, prescription drugs, preventive services, home health care, skilled nursing facilities and hospice care for 60 million older people and younger people with disabilities.
